What You NeedYour Packing List

We want to make sure you have everything you need to make your treatment successful. We devised our list of items to bring with your long-term recovery in mind. If you have any questions about our list, please talk to your admissions counselor.

Please Note: The lists below are specific to our Residential-Inpatient treatment programs.

For a detailed list of items to bring to any other level of care – Detox, Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, General Outpatient, or Office-Based Opioid Treatment – please contact staff at your location.

We’ll anticipate the first question most people ask about what to bring to residential treatment: no personal electronics of any kind. No exceptions, no wiggle room.

Clothing (Pack for 1 Week)
  • Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing for one week. Think:
    • Pajamas, sweatpants, jeans, comfortable shoes, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jacket
  • In the summer, swimsuits are appropriate for some of our locations.
  • Socks, belts, and undergarments
  • On-site laundry available at certain locations. Detergent provided.
Toiletries & Personal Care
  • Non-aerosol toiletries, including washcloth and body wash
  • Tampons: location-specific based on septic system
  • Must not contain alcohol in the first three ingredients – DOES NOT have to be new/unopened
  • Any current medications you take in their original prescription bottles.
  • Non-prescription medications such as vitamins need to be in unopened packages
  • Up to 2 cartons of unopened packs of cigarettes.
  • Unopened cans of chewing tobacco are accepted.
  • Reading material: notebook and pen, recovery-related reading material, spiritual reading material, coloring book/crosswords
Other Personal Items
  • Photo ID, preferred but not required
  • Insurance Card
  • Valid Credit Card, if applicable for payment plans, prescriptions, etc.
  • Prescription Card, if applicable
  • Money order of $250 recommended, prepaid Visa, or valid credit card for prescription co-pays. Our pharmacies do not accept American Express.
Optional Items
  • Smokers can bring up to two unopened cartons of cigarettes
  • Recovery-related reading material
  • Spiritual reading material
  • Legal documents
  • Stationery/stamps
Do Not Bring
  • Clothing with inappropriate logos, slogans, or images. This mostly applies to t-shirts. Examples:
    • T-shirts with alcohol brand insignia, marijuana leaves, jokes about alcohol or substance use, advocating a drug or alcohol-related party lifestyle, hate speech
    • Pants with holes above mid-thigh
    • Immodest attire (spaghetti straps, strapless, “muscle shirts,” sheer clothing, low cut tops, midriff tops, shorts/skirts shorter than fingertip length, spandex/tight fitting tights)
  • Jewelry or items of high value
  • Cologne, mouthwash, laundry detergent, nail polish, aerosol cans/products, hair dye, cleaning products
  • Aerosol cans/products including hairspray, spray deodorant, etc.
  • Hair dye or chemical treatments
  • Drugs, alcohol, weapons, pocketknives, bottle openers
  • Sharp objects including nail trimmers, scissors, files
  • Pornographic or sexually explicit objects/materials, sexual toys/accessories
  • Food, drinks, gum, candy
  • Electronics: cameras, laptops, tablets, headphones, smartwatches, video games, cell phones, flash drives
    • Cell phones, if brought in, will be held in our lockers
  • Opened tobacco products unless opened in presence of PTC staff member
  • Electronic cigarettes/vapes, cigars, powdered nicotine, lighters
    • Nicotine lozenges/gum. Smoking cessation products must be prescribed and given to Medical Team
  • Household items such as candles, incense, wax warmers, fans, sporting equipment
  • Cash, debit, or credit cards (small amounts of cash can be placed on a Patient Balance Sheet that can be used for Store Runs for tobacco/hygiene – patients do not keep this in their possession)
  • Linens: we provide bedding, pillows, towels – do not bring your own
  • Cleaning products (laundry soap for medical reasons is allowed, medical must approve in writing and it must be unopened)


*Any questionable items will be reviewed at admission and a decision will be made by Executive Director, Clinical Director, or Residential Manager 

Special Note

  • Please limit clothing to one week
  • Please bring only one piece of luggage
  • You do not need to bring linens, blankets, pillows, or other bedding items
